When Should Children Start Music Lessons?

Learning an instrument is hard! I started playing the cello when I was nine years old and I hated that first year (Fortunately, I was too shy to tell my teacher I wanted to quit. So here I am 14 years later still playing). I know it doesn’t have to be this way. Music lessons can be really fun. Starting younger with a private teacher is a great way to introduce your child to music.

I teach piano, violin, and cello at a couple local stores; I have students from 4 years old to adult. Most of them come to me as beginners, and I get to see the different challenges each age group has. It depends on the child, but for most I believe that between 5 and 6 is the perfect time to start music lessons.

The kids at this age are like sponges; they remember so much! It always surprises me. If you do decide to start lessons, look for a teacher that understands the challenges of this age group aka the short attention span and keeps the lessons fun. For my students, we spend 20 minutes at the instrument and then get down on the floor and play music games. The kids love this! They always want to come back so they can play some more.
