Yala Review
The DreamSack was the idea that would eventually spark the creation of the family company known today as Yala. In 1987, Nancy and Larry were English teachers working in China with their daughter. After sleeping on beds without sheets or mattresses, they came up with the idea of sewing two sheets together. The result was the first DreamSack – a clean and comfortable liner that was easy to carry around and use wherever they happened to be sleeping.
Today Yala produces sustainable bedding (including the DreamSack), bath products, as well as clothing for the entire family.
A quote from their website, sums this company’s mission very well, ”We believe we are all one tribe: equal, hopeful citizens of the globe. We care deeply about our impact on the planet. We are always evolving, learning, looking for a better way.”
Review
I was excited to receive Yala’s new Bamboo Dreams Harlow top. Like the name suggests, it is made from 95% Viscose from Bamboo (the other 5% is spandex).
Since moving to Hawaii, I have experienced hiking through my first bamboo forest. According to the website, PlanetGreen.com, “In the right conditions, bamboo grows at an astonishing rate of 2 inches an hour…conservative estimates place its growth rate around 24 inches a day.” I knew it grew fast, but that is amazing! Here is a picture of me on a recent hike through the bamboo. It is hard to tell in the picture, but the bamboo was so thick all through this area.
Even if it is very sustainable, we all want our clothing to be stylish and comfortable as well. I had never felt bamboo fabric, so I was curious. I imagined it would feel something like cotton. It doesn’t, it’s so much softer. The fabric is thin and incredibly comfortable.
Here is a picture of me wearing the Harlow top in Amarinth, size small. I wore it tucked into a white pencil skirt with a thick, tan belt.
I really like the wide Dolman sleeves. It also has ruching along both sides, which creates a flattering shape.
I love the cut, color and feel of this top. I have one problem with it; however, the fabric is already starting to pill in the front. I haven’t even washed it yet. I was so disappointed to see this because I adore this shirt. I will definitely be washing by hand.
